Inside Baseball: Yankees need to play 'Let's Make a Deal'

On the field, the biggest controversy thus far in Yankees camp is who will be the No. 5 starter. They have to decide between Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain, one starting and one working out of the bullpen. And neither did much in his first start of the spring to help that decision along. But that's not even close to the real story that's lingering in Tampa. (Updated: 03/06/10 10:25 PM )

Inside Baseball: A starting nine of questions for spring training

Pitchers and catchers have reported to Florida and Arizona. Full squad workouts begin this week. And we're still watching the snow fly. No matter. (Updated: 02/20/10 8:32 PM )

It’s Pujols, then who knows for awards

The postseason is just heating up but the balloting is over for baseball’s major awards. There are some slam-dunk choices (see Pujols, Albert) and plenty of interesting discussion to be had in some of the categories. In particular, there is going to be some intense debate this year over the Cy Young Awards in both leagues. (Updated: 10/11/09 7:18 AM )

Dice-K just one of many Red Sox pitching worries

Wasn’t it just a couple of months ago the Red Sox were talking about a six-man rotation? Now it seems, to borrow the old Milwaukee Braves adage, that they’re down to Josh Beckett and Jon Lester and pray for rain. (Updated: 08/09/09 6:21 AM )

Should Jays, Tribe wave white flag for 2010 now?

TORONTO—The trade deadline comes Friday and you’re going to see the usual deals of a big-money player from a bad team going to a contender (Matt Holliday from Oakland to St. Louis). That’s especially true in the case of a player like Holliday, who is going to be a free agent after the season anyway. Oakland got a nice haul of prospects for a guy it would have never re-signed. ‘T. O. Show’ is a television train wreck

The clock was approaching 10 p. m. Monday. The cable box was tuned to Channel 61. I got my popcorn ready. I was diving in full bore. (Updated: 08/24/09 3:40 PM )

MannybeingManny gets free pass in Tinseltown

He just returned to his home park Thursday and I’m officially sick of the Manny Ramirez love fest already. Hey, folks in Mannywood: He cheated. Put that fact under your fake dreadlocks and ponder it. (Updated: 07/19/09 11:41 AM )

Waterlogged Yankees are stuck in a pickle

The situation in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has become an utter embarrassment for officials of the Triple-A Yankees and the International League. PNC Field is only 20 years old and it’s falling apart, with studies showing it needs $13 million in upgrades and really should be replaced. Now a month’s worth of rain has rendered the field a disaster area, and the Bisons are meeting the Yankees this weekend in Syracuse rather than Moosic, Pa. (Updated: 07/13/09 12:55 AM )

This year, fan voters didn’t reach for the stars

I know. I know. The All-Star Game is for the fans and that’s why they should vote. I’m pretty much OK with that and the results of this year’s voting, which get announced today at 1 on TBS, look like they will be a lot more down the middle than past years. There’s not the absurd ballot stuffing in places you’d expect such as New York, Boston or Philly. (Updated: 07/05/09 7:21 AM )

Votto shows toughness by disclosing problems

With all the bizarre headlines surrounding the game every day, it's certainly easy to forget the human element to it. Once in a while, you get that slap to the side of the head that reminds who and it's actually refreshing in era where ESPN arrogantly thinks it sets the agenda on who and what is important in the sports world.
