Can Kobe, Phil get their due?

Updated: 06/17/09 6:53 AM

Itook a great deal of pleasure writing this column. Having grown up a Los Angeles Lakers fan, it was with extreme joy that I watched them dispatch the Orlando Magic to capture another NBA championship.

AFC East foes not at a loss for words

Updated: 06/15/09 8:44 AM

It was a pretty quiet offseason for the Buffalo Bills, a development even Terrell Owens found surprising given the ruckus his presence usually brings. But silence has not been golden for the rest of the AFC East.

Updated: 06/03/09 7:03 AM

Roscoe Parrish is unhappy. He made that clear last week when he spoke briefly with the media.

Kelly's passion for football burns on
News Sports Columnist

Updated: 07/01/09 10:46 AM

He's less than a year shy of 50, nearly 13 years removed from the game, which leads you to wonder how much passion Jim Kelly brings to his football camp these days. Is this his operation in name only, or does he remain an active participant? Does he show up at noon and go through the motions, or is he there from the get-go, highly visible and raring to teach some football?

Golfer puts on a show at Jr. Masters

Updated: 06/25/09 7:02 AM

Anthony Burdi was 29 holes into medal play at the International Junior Masters on Wednesday and it had hardly been worth the trip from suburban Chicago. He sat 14 over par. He was coming off consecutive bogeys. His chances of qualifying for the championship flight were vanishing quicker than federal bailout money.

Fahey graduates from First Tee to Jr. Masters
News Sports Columnist

Updated: 06/23/09 8:29 AM

Patrick Fahey got the bug last year, when he attended the Ham- Am preceding the International Junior Masters. He knew players who were in the field. He witnessed the vast array of young talent that had gathered from as close as the host club, East Aurora Country Club, and as far away as South Korea, Colombia and Mexico.

Sabres tread water while others swim
News Sports Columnist

Updated: 07/02/09 7:55 AM

The Sabres made yet another blunder en route to the first day of the NHL's free agent signing period. The difference in this one, which was hardly shocking but left people shaking their heads just the same, was that it came in an attempt to appease the masses after years of offending them.

Not a Kid anymore: Crosby a bona fide champ
AT THE STANLEY CUP

Updated: 06/13/09 12:54 AM

DETROIT — Sidney Crosby made it clear the Penguins would win the Stanley Cup when nobody was on the ice Friday night. He emerged from the dressing room in full equipment, confirming nothing would prevent him from accepting the trophy that belonged to him for his entire life.

McGuire has witnessed best series in memory

Updated: 06/13/09 6:27 AM

DETROIT— For seven games, Pierre McGuire had the best seat in the house. The forthright NBC analyst was wedged between the benches during the Stanley Cup, so close to the action that he could practically smell the players’ breath.

Call me naive, but ‘Go Pujols!’

Updated: 07/03/09 6:55 AM

It’s easy to be cynical about baseball nowadays. Every power hitter is suspect. Every home run leaves the park with an asterisk attached. But how can you continue to love baseball, a simple kid’s game, if you surrender a child’s boundless capacity for belief?

Votto shows toughness by disclosing problems

Updated: 06/28/09 8:34 AM

With all the bizarre headlines surrounding the game every day, it's certainly easy to forget the human element to it. Once in a while, you get that slap to the side of the head that reminds who and it's actually refreshing in era where ESPN arrogantly thinks it sets the agenda on who and what is important in the sports world.

A high-five to Jonny Flynn. What a great moment for Niagara Falls High School and for Western New York basketball. We’ll see him live all over our TV screens next winter.

For the next two weeks starting Monday, viewers can have “Breakfast with Wimbledon” every morning. ESPN2 goes on the air daily at 7 a.m. from the All England Tennis& Croquet Club and this year there’s a guarantee that there won’t be any rainouts of top matches because of the retractable roof over Centre Court.

Too much Tiger from TV cameras

After two rounds of the U. S. Open, under conditions that are the most favorable to low scores in decades, Tiger Woods was three strokes over par and 11 strokes behind the leader.

Will these Sabres get a kick at the can?

Sid’s just one kid, not the whole league

Updated: 06/28/09 7:06 AM

Last week’s letter writer is way off base when he accuses the Detroit Red Wings of whining about Sidney Crosby and that they should “accept your defeat with humility.” The team itself took nothing away from Pittsburgh’s win and is one of the classiest organizations in all of sports.
