Dry Martini takes first
NEW YORK—Dry Martini rallied from last place, beating Asiatic Boy by two lengths in the $400,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park.
The Suburban topped a trio of stakes on the Independence Day card. Cat Moves won the $300,000 Prioress while Kensei captured the $200,000 Dwyer.
Dry Martini ($23.60), a 6-year-old gelding, became a millionaire with his ninth career win, worth $240,000. It boosted his earnings to $1,152,406 for owner Carol Nyren.
Edgar Prado, who earlier won the Dwyer, let Dry Martini settle at the back of the pack while long shot Finallymadeit set the pace. Dry Martini split horses turning for home and surged to the wire for his second win in five starts this year. The time was 2:00.80 for the 1v mile 1/3 on the fast track.
Meanwhile, Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith will pilot Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in the $750,000 West Virginia Derby and the $1 million Travers Stakes next month.
Smith takes over for Calvin Borel, who guided the 3-year-old gelding to a longshot win in the Kentucky Derby and later added a third-place finish in the Belmont Stakes.
